A ceremony in feudalism that evidenced the relationship between a lord and vassal. The vassal knelt before the lord, acknowledged himself to be the lord’s man, and swore to be faithful to his lord. The ceremony was often accompanied by a grant of land (or sometimes a monetary annuity) from the lord to the vassal.
